The first step for installing a new fence is a survey of the area where we can identify any utilities that may run along a fence line, check how the contours of the ground level may change, take measurements, etc. We aim to communicate effectively in a discussion with the client regarding the appropriate fencing options available and deliver something perfectly suited in terms of budget and aesthetic. It is also an opportunity to dicuss the process and outline any potential disruptions during the fencing installation. As fencing is construction work there are several legal obligations that fall directly upon the client which are the responsibility of the client to meet. For fencing installations at domestic properties most of these obligations will default to us as the contractor but we will guide you through this process if necessary.
The next step is clearance of a space for the new fence to go. Ideally we need 1m clear either side of the new fence to install it at our best efficiency but we have the experience to install it in hard to access areas if this isn't possible. When clearing an area if there are trees along the line of the new fence we will always do our best to give priority to the tree and if we're working in flower beds or other sensitive areas great care will be taken to minimise disruption as much as possible. It is quite common where a fence runs along the edge of a patio or other slabbed area to have to remove slabs or break into a concrete path to complete the works so disruption is quite often unavoidable. The British Standards guidelines recommend a 300mm wide hole for fitting a fence post so ideally we need that much space wherever a fence post falls.
Installing the fence usually consists of starting at one point and then working methodically along the fence line installing one fence post and bay at a time. Doing it this way minimises the need for open holes left onsite which helps deliver our great health and safety record. Doing one fence post and bay at a time also minimises the margin for error in delivering a really sharp, straight fence line too. When installing standard sized (1.83m width) fence panels on uneven ground a balance needs to be found between gaps under the gravel boards and the height of any steps between the panel heights at the top. This is one of the reasons effective communication is so important when choosing the appropriate fencing options.
After installation of the fence we can redress and taper the ground level to create a cleaner edge and tidy any disturbance that has arisen from the fencing works. We can also lay any patio slabs that might have been disrupted or do any other reinstatement works necessary. We can also carry out other small landscpaing works along the line of the new fence such as returfing areas, decking repairs, repointing paths to give the whole area an improved look.
